Nokia N800 Convergence Product Manger Interview Victor Brilon

While at the recent CTIA conference, I met Victor Brilon and his immensely helpful Nokia publicist. We shared a dynamic conversation that was amazingly informative regarding Nokia and it’s unique ideas regarding the various types of emerging Internet convergence. The Nokia N800 is a device that is clearly “on the other side of the chasm” as Victor proudly describes it. In the time that has followed my visit to CTIA two themes have emerged regarding Nokia 1) They understand the blogosphere and see a significant event in convergence coming and are preparing for these possibilities and 2) The frame I saw when at their booth was one of company who views themselves as “more than just a device maker”. I like that point of view.

Please enjoy my attempt to recreate the magic of my first unplanned meeting with Victor via this podcast. I welcome your feedback on the discussion from yourself and others, especially in regards to your thoughts on the vision for convergence. Thanks!

Google Disasterous with the Letter D

Apparently Google has considerable trouble in regards to the letter D.

First the Dmarc founders left Google.

Now http://www.dodgeball.com/ (dead link 11/2010) founders, Dens Crowley and Alex Rainert (please drop me a note if you read this guys), not only have left Google but they posed for a thumbs down photo that they have posted on Flickr, a Yahoo! property. The photo already has over 26,000 views and appears to have a viral element based on the view count growth, the interesting comments on the Flickr photo and a lot of blogosphere reaction. I’m trying to imagine how frustrated someone must be to post of photo of this nature, announce new project associations and state that they are throwing a party “to celebrate our escape”.

Putting my investment management hat on, I’d like for independent analysts to be allowed on the earning call this Thursday. If allowed to do so, I’d like to ask the following question, “Why is Google having such a hard time with HR and staffing issues, whether it is regarding hiring new employees, retaining pre-IPO employees (see podcast) or integrating acquisitions? Has Laszlo Bock’s background proven not to be the right style of leadership and is it time for a change?” The “all big companies are always ineffective” is a major cop out as there are big companies that are admired and in fact some cases adored.

Ideas on what to do with Dodgeball are everywhere you look. The comments on the Flickr photo are fascinating to read. P.S. When searching for these entries on Google Blog Search I found considerable splog/spam (MFA Made for Adsense) sites – Google should work to solve that issue.

Joshua Schachter = Awesomely Helpful Guy

I was having a small problem with del.icio.us, after stumbling around the site, I found a Yahoo! yellow smiley face with his name on it. Not only did he address my issue, we chatted for about 30 minutes. Tremendously nice fellow. It’s nice to see a founder still accessible and working away on his project a year after an acquisition.

It would be nice to get an interview about current and upcoming del.icio.us issues in the form of an interview or something on this blog. Please consider this an open invitation.

Yahoo Suggestions – Suggestion Deleted

In my post earlier today on Yahoo! Suggestions, I stated the following (in bold no less):

“If Yahoo! builds the appropriate mechanisms to utilize and respond to this feedback, it could easily be the most important thing they do all year.”

I made a post on Yahoo! Suggestions – “Yahoo! E-mail – please improve the spam filters – too much spam gets through” in the hopes that it would get voted on by other people caring about the issue and that Yahoo! would respond by putting resources on correcting the issue. At mid-afternoon, the entry had 9 votes. Then I got the message below stating it was deleted. As I write this I’m absolutely stunned, how can Yahoo! state that the “Suggestion is not actionable by owners of this Suggestion Board, therefore we are removing it.” If this is going to be the normal procedure of Yahoo! Suggestions, I now have serious concerns about the success of the Yahoo! Suggestions initiative. Hopefully, they will review the procedures and improve this.

Maybe Major Media Should Actually Research How Digg Works

Probably like you most of you, I’m getting tired of the major media writing stories about social media that are completely inaccurate and not fully researched. They spread inaccurate information that is often the first impression for many people. In recent “The Wizards of Buzz” WSJ article, Jamin Warren and John Jurgensen wrote the following:

  • “On the other side of this battle are companies like User/Submitter.com. The site promises to pay users “easy money” for “digging,” or voting on, links on Digg.com. Its offer is simple: Pay User/Submitter $1 for every “digg,” or vote, you request and in turn it’ll pay a user. Users can earn 50 cents for every three “diggs,” and User/Submitter pockets the difference. At any given time, a top submission on Digg has anywhere from 800 to 3,000 votes, meaning a successful campaign could cost thousands of dollars.”

While I don’t know anything about User/Submitter.com (nor do I want to for obvious reasons) – I do know this statement from the article shows a clear lack of understanding of how Digg actually works. I got a bright idea, why don’t reporters like Jamin and John actually sign up, log in and use the system for a while before writing stories like this? It’s a good question.

If they had, they would understand that for a story to make the front page, it usually takes between 25-60 Diggs depending on various factors (time of day, amount of activity that day, etc). Once a story is on the front page, the now Dugg content organically gets tons of Diggs as it migrates from the top of the home page. So, even if someone did manage to page $1 per Digg, it would not cost thousands of dollars.

You might want to e-mail the reporters that wrote this story in the link above and ask them to do actual research by using social media before writing their next story. The gap between major media and social media might become smaller if they did.
